A person may also experience redness, flaking skin, open and enlarged pores and in some cases scarring. It is one of the most common of all skin problems and appears mainly on the face, but also be found on the chest, back, shoulders and neck. It is estimated that at least 90% of the population will have acne at some time during their life.

There are three contributing factors to acne- the over production of oil, the irregular shedding of dead skin cells and the build-up of bacteria. It's also more often than not a hereditary condition. A genetic "defect" results in a kind of "cellular-glue" being over produced in the follicle. At the onset of the acne process, this glue-like substance causes a microscopic blockage consisting of compacted dead cells, called comedomes. At this stage the process is developing in the follicle only and the skin can appear entirely clear and unaffected. As the cells continue to stick together, oil begins to get trapped within the follicle, the oil is "consumed" by bacteria, which then excrete an inflammatory fatty acid by-product. Eventually, usually after several weeks to months, the follicle becomes completely blocked. It is at this stage that various acne lesions begin to surface.

Acne can appear at any age in some cases can persist throughout one’s life however it's more common and usually begins around puberty, when both sexes experience an increase in production of hormones. These hormones regulate the activity and the size of the oil-producing sebaceous glands that reside in the hair follicle of the skin. The increased production of these hormones causes the oil glands to get bigger to where acne occurs. It's not uncommon for individuals over 30, to suddenly develop this condition even though they never had it in their younger years.
